In-Home Care Services

Do you or your loved one need assistance with care in the home? Resources for Seniors is a good place to start your search. View our Home Care Services List or call us to request a copy via mail or email.

Resources for Seniors also administers public funding for programs that provide limited home care at subsidized rates for Wake County residents who have no caregiver or whose caregivers need a break from caregiving. These programs typically have long waiting lists. Contact our Information Department at 919-713-1556 to learn more.

Caregiver Support

Many older adults would not be able to stay in their own homes without devoted family members and friends who provide their time, energy, and love. Caregivers need to know their efforts are appreciated and sometimes need a place to blow off steam and get ideas of what to do next. Our caregiver counselors provide individualized short-term emotional support, problem-solving, and referral services. There is no charge for these consultations, though donations are appreciated. Call the Information Department at 919-713-1556 to request an appointment.

If you’re interested in a support group, view our list of Caregiver Support Groups to find one in your area.

CAP/DA

Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults (CAP/DA) is an alternative to nursing home care for adults who:

  • Are 18 and over
  • Require nursing home level care
  • Are at risk of nursing home placement if they don’t get community-based care
  • Meet strict financial eligibility criteria

CAP/DA is an extension of Medicaid and is intended for individuals who have very limited financial resources. However, eligibility for CAP/DA differs from regular Medicaid in several important ways. Most significantly, CAP/DA eligibility is determined by the income and assets of the client only (not the spouse or other family members).

For those who qualify, CAP/DA provides extensive home and community-based services, which may include some services not covered by regular Medicaid, such as:

  • Adult day programs
  • In-home care (excludes 24-hour care)
  • Supplies such as incontinence products and nutritional supplements

To apply for or make a referral to CAP/DA, the client, family member, or professional (often a social worker or physical therapist) should contact our Information Department at 919-713-1556. You can also complete our online Speed Referral form. This form allows our intake staff to generate a request for service.

Medication Programs

Because we prioritize your health and well-being, Resources for Seniors has several medication programs to assist seniors in Wake County access medication and have the correct information about that medication.

See Information & Referrals to read about medical transportation services.

The Medication Education for Drug Safety (MEDS) program at Resources for Seniors is designed to help seniors get the information they need to take their medication appropriately. Clients who enter RFS case management programs are screened for possible medication-related issues and receive more comprehensive medication review and education when possible problems are identified.

The MEDS program also works cooperatively with Campbell University to educate pharmacy students about working with older adults. The students work with RFS clients in a number of settings, providing health monitoring and education, and assisting with prescription reviews.

The Medication Assistance Plan for Seniors (MAPS) existed before prescription drug coverage under Medicare to help seniors access free medications available through pharmaceutical company patient assistance programs. The program currently serves clients aged 50-64 who are not eligible for Medicare Part D and clients with Medicare who have exhausted their prescription drug coverage.

Are your medications putting you at risk? Avoid problems with a HomeMeds screening. If you’re interested in this free program, please contact Nancy Burl, CPhT at 919-713-1546 or nancyb@rfsnc.org to schedule this free assessment.
